An old belt, a piece of fabric, and a stapler…
The idea for Rookie was born with our first baby – and to be honest, we were complete rookies ourselves. We had no idea what to expect, but that didn't stop us from traveling the world with our 7-week-old daughter. Whether through jungles or bustling metropolises – we carried her everywhere, always on the lookout for the perfect baby carrier. But we just couldn't find it.
After 1.5 years and 100,000 kilometers , when we had become true babywearing experts, we knew one thing for sure: we would develop our own baby carrier.
The first prototype – a piece of fabric, an old belt and a stapler
With no experience in textile production, we simply started. We took a piece of fabric, cut it freehand into the shape of a baby carrier, and stapled it together. We sewed this first "masterpiece" onto an old belt – and our first prototype was born.
We took this ungainly contraption to a tailor in Berlin . The seamstress, who usually only hemmed our trousers, looked at us wide-eyed. Was it really so difficult to turn this idea into a real baby carrier? We didn't give up – and a few days later we were holding our first sewn prototype in our hands.
Perfectionism & Setbacks – Why there were almost no rookies
We scoured countless shops for the best fabrics, buckles, and materials . Our biggest challenge? Never being satisfied.
We tested thousands of combinations:
✔ How does the buckle close?
✔ Is it safe?
✔ How does the material feel?
✔ What does the click of the buckle sound like?
But something was always missing. Frustrated, we shelved our project for the time being. Should we just give up?
The children's birthday party that changed everything
One day we were invited to a children's birthday party. In the chaos of the day, we were looking for a quick way to take our sleeping daughter with us – and found our makeshift baby carrier .
We had barely arrived when another mother approached us:
👉 “Wow, beautiful baby carrier!”
Did she mean it? Yes! And that very moment gave us the courage to continue.
From dream to reality – Production begins
We were finally ready to put our Rookie baby carrier into production . But that was easier said than done. We received rejections, no answers – and doubts arose again.
After lengthy discussions, we found a production facility nearby that was willing to work with us. But that wasn't all: We packed each order ourselves, labeled the packages by hand , and took them to the post office at night.
Rookie today – 7 years of growth and innovation
A lot has changed since our beginnings. We have learned, developed further and grown. Today, with the Premium Elite, we have already developed our fifth Rookie model – the most advanced and comfortable carrier we have ever had.
But Rookie is more than just a baby carrier. Besides our carrier covers , the adorable doll carrier for children, and our practical diaper bag, we are constantly expanding our product range. We've learned an incredible amount in the last seven years , but we also know there's still room for improvement.
