The postpartum period: Your preparation for a restful and happy time after birth

Das Wochenbett: Deine Vorbereitung auf eine erholsame und glückliche Zeit nach der Geburt

The first few weeks after your baby's birth, also known as the postpartum period, are a time full of changes, emotions, and special moments. During this phase, it's especially important that you're well-prepared so you can focus on getting to know and cuddling your newborn – without being overwhelmed by additional challenges.

During pregnancy, the focus is often on preparing for childbirth, but the postpartum period deserves just as much attention. With our 9 tips for the postpartum period, you'll be well-prepared and can enjoy this precious time with your baby.

1. Clear the calendar

In the first six weeks after giving birth, you should plan as little as possible. Only schedule important appointments such as midwife visits or check-ups with the pediatrician. Everything else can wait. Your partner should also take time off during this period to support you. Only allow visits from friends and family if you feel up to it.

2. Prepare a meal plan

Healthy nutrition is especially important after giving birth. Think ahead about how you'll be well-nourished during the postpartum period. You can prepare and freeze complete meals, or create a list of delivery services. Even better: ask friends or family if they can bring you freshly prepared meals after the birth.

3. Create cozy retreats

It's called the postpartum period, but that doesn't mean you have to stay in bed all the time. The important thing is to make yourself and your little one comfortable. So, feel free to create cozy corners in your home before the birth, so that when you get back, you have different places to retreat to, rest, and care for your baby. A baby carrier like our Rookie baby carrier can be a huge help here – you have your baby close to you while still having your hands free to take care of household chores or other things at your own pace.

4. Have useful home remedies on hand

Simple home remedies can help you during the postpartum period: quark compresses or lactation teas for engorgement, flaxseeds and prunes for digestion – there are many easy remedies you can prepare in advance. This way, you're well-prepared for any discomfort without having to run to the pharmacy.

5. Provide entertainment

Even though your baby is the center of your world, there will be moments when you need some time for yourself. Find entertainment that relaxes you and makes you feel good – a good book, a light series, or podcasts can help you unwind and switch off.

6. Pack comfortable clothing.

Even after giving birth, you'll still need comfortable clothing for a while. Don't pack away your maternity clothes right away, as they'll serve you well in the first few weeks after delivery. Think about comfort, especially while you're breastfeeding or recovering from childbirth.

7. Listen to your gut feeling

During the postpartum period, you'll receive a lot of advice from others. Listen to your gut feeling – you're the one who knows best what's good for you and your baby. Not every piece of advice needs to be followed, and it's perfectly fine to only accept what feels right to you.

8. Accept emotional fluctuations

It's normal to feel emotional during the postpartum period. The so-called "baby blues" affects many mothers in the first few days after giving birth. Tears, joy, and sadness often alternate. It's important to give yourself time to adjust to your new role and to take your feelings seriously. If this continues to bother you for an extended period, talk to your midwife about the possibility of postpartum depression.

9. Accept help

Whether it's cleaning, shopping, or cooking – don't hesitate to accept help from others. Family, friends, or a housekeeper can make everyday life easier during this time, allowing you to focus on what's most important: you and your baby.
