You wake up in the morning and it hits you right in the stomach: "EVERYTHING SMELLS SO STRANGE!"
Your nose has developed a kind of superpower overnight. You suddenly perceive things you never even remotely noticed or smelled before. The mere smell, or even just the thought of milk, chicken, or perhaps even one of your favorite perfumes, makes you feel queasy.
The infamous morning sickness is here.
If you're lucky, you'll be one of those pregnant women whose morning sickness only lasts a few weeks. However, it usually lasts until around the 13th week, or in rare cases, throughout the entire pregnancy.
Actually, the term "morning sickness" isn't entirely accurate. Nausea can occur at any time of day. It often happens in the evening or is exacerbated by certain smells or foods.
But remember: it will pass! Here are a few tips to help you get through the nausea better.
9 tips against (morning) nausea during pregnancy
-
Eat before you get up: Try having saltine crackers or cookies while still in bed. This can help stabilize your blood sugar.
- Foods that can help relieve nausea: lemon or lemon juice and ginger (e.g., ginger cookies or raw ginger)
- Foods high in vitamin B6: bananas, avocados, sweet potatoes, watermelon
- Unprocessed and simple carbohydrates such as oatmeal, potatoes and dried toast
- Chewing gum or mints help against nausea
- Eat several smaller portions instead of a few large portions: This will help your stomach digest better!
- Avoid anything that worsens the nausea: This could be spicy food or even a specific food item. Sometimes we even feel nauseous while cooking itself. Ask your partner, friends, or family to help you with the cooking if you feel that it makes you feel more nauseous.
- Breathing and relaxation exercises, as well as rest: Try taking deep breaths in and out when you feel nauseous. Stress can also worsen nausea. Relaxation exercises and rest help reduce stress and therefore also the nausea.
- Drink plenty of fluids: It's so important that you stay well-hydrated. Even aside from the nausea, water has so many benefits and is good for your body and mind. If plain water tastes too bland, you can add lemon, mint, or cucumber slices, for example.
We hope these tips have helped you! ❤️ And remember: It will pass!
