8 tips for breastfeeding babies & its challenges

8 Tipps zum Stillen von Babys & dessen Herausforderungen

Breastfeeding – a wonderful act of love that strengthens the bond between mother and child. A journey full of emotions that touches our hearts and fills us with so much joy. Dear mom, in this article we'll talk about the breathtaking highs, but also the lows, of breastfeeding. We'll also share some valuable tips that can help you master these challenges.

Tip 1: Correct application

Proper latching is crucial for making breastfeeding as comfortable and pain-free as possible for both you and your baby. When your baby properly latches onto the nipple and has most of the areola in their mouth, they will suckle effectively and stimulate milk production. Make sure your baby holds their head and body in a straight line and opens their mouth wide while breastfeeding. If you are unsure, you can seek help from a lactation consultant or healthcare professional to find the right breastfeeding position and improve latching.

Tip 2: Change your position

Trying out different breastfeeding positions can make a big difference! Every body is different, so it's important to find the most comfortable and effective positions for you and your baby. Here are some breastfeeding positions you can try:

a) Cradle hold: This is the classic breastfeeding position where you hold your baby in your arms as if in a cradle. Support your baby's head with your forearm and keep them close to your side. This position is particularly well-suited for sitting comfortably and feeling very close to your baby.

b) Football hold: In this position, you hold your baby sideways under your arm, similar to a football. Support your baby's head with your hand while they lie on your side. The football hold is especially good if you have a larger baby or if you had a cesarean section, as it reduces pressure on your abdomen.

c) Breastfeeding while lying down: This position allows you to lie down and lay your baby on their side so that your bellies are touching. This is probably the most relaxed and comfortable way to breastfeed, which is why this position is particularly suitable for nighttime feedings.

d) Supine position: In this position, your baby sits upright on your thigh while you support them from behind. This position can help if your baby has difficulty coordinating sucking.

Tip 3: Use a nursing pillow

A nursing pillow can help you find a comfortable breastfeeding position and relieve strain on your back and neck. It's usually oblong or C-shaped and provides support for your arm and back while breastfeeding. By placing the nursing pillow around your waist and positioning your baby on it, you can create a comfortable and ergonomic breastfeeding position. It also helps distribute the baby's weight, thus reducing neck and back pain. The nursing pillow is especially helpful if you plan to breastfeed for an extended period or if your baby is still small and light in the first few weeks.

Tip 4: Boost milk production

A balanced diet and adequate hydration are crucial for good milk production. Make sure you eat a healthy and varied diet and drink enough fluids. Your body needs extra energy and fluids to produce enough breast milk. You can also support milk production by always having a glass of water within reach while breastfeeding.

Tip 5: Seek support when you need it!

You're not alone on this journey, dear mom. Seek support from your family and friends. Connect with other breastfeeding mothers, whether in person or online. Share your experiences, listen to their stories, and be inspired by their encouragement and support. Together, you can climb the highs and overcome the lows. Tip 6: Breastfeeding at night

Nighttime breastfeeding is just as important as daytime breastfeeding. In the first few months, your baby will often be hungry at night, and nighttime feedings help regulate your milk supply. It's normal for babies to wake up more frequently at night to feed, as they have a faster metabolism. Try to make breastfeeding as comfortable as possible by creating a cozy corner in your bedroom where you and your baby can feed in peace. Dimmed lights will help ensure that your baby's sleep cycle isn't disturbed.

Tip 7: Nipple care

Caring for your nipples while breastfeeding is important to avoid potential discomfort and injury. Here are some tips on how to properly care for your nipples:

  • Air drying : After breastfeeding, let your nipples air dry. This reduces moisture and promotes healing.
  • Avoid friction : Wear loose and comfortable bras that don't rub or constrict your nipples. Tight clothing can cause friction and further irritate the nipples.
  • Lanolin cream : Use lanolin cream or other special nipple creams to soothe and care for the skin. These creams also help reduce cracking and pain.
  • Use nursing pads : Cotton nursing pads absorb moisture and keep your nipples dry. Be sure to change them regularly to prevent moisture buildup, as this can promote infections!
  • Avoid soap : Wash your nipples with plain water only and avoid using soap, as this can dry out the skin.
  • Alternate breastfeeding : Switch the breastfeeding side at each feeding. This ensures both nipples are used evenly and reduces the chance of overuse.

Tip 8: Be patient with yourself!

Breastfeeding is a learning process that requires time and patience. There will be times when it can be difficult and challenging. Be patient with yourself, dear mom. Every breastfeeding relationship is unique, and you will grow and learn together with your baby. Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them. You are a wonderful mother, and your love and devotion will carry you through every challenge.
